Alien invasion meme2/19/2023 ![]() It shows how this war, which has seen online disinformation and Twitter-trolling on an unprecedented scale, has become one fought (and maybe won) on alternative information warfare.Īt the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, the West had done little to counter Moscow’s fake news with an information offensive of its own.īut weaponising meme culture has quickly become a success story for Ukraine, in many ways.Īnother very successful campaign – the North Atlantic Fellas Organization (NAFO) – has meanwhile developed into a global internet army that aims to challenge Russian disinformation online. “After a successful referendum, 97,9% of Kaliningrad residents decided to merge with the Czech Republic and rename Kaliningrad to Královec,” it stated in comments that echoed – and mocked – Russia’s recent referendums in occupied parts of Ukraine.īy then, the Czech-language Wikipedia page of Kaliningrad was already updated to show the exclave as belonging to the Czech Republic.Īdmittedly, it’s easy to spot the joke here though a mock petition calling for the annexation of the Russian port city to the Czech Republic has received nearly 12,000 electronic signatures since it was posted on the website last Tuesday. ![]() On Tuesday, the newly created Twitter account the success of the initiative: ![]() “It’s time to divide Kaliningrad so that our Czech brothers finally have access to the sea,” the Polish account author stated. On Monday (3 October), Czech MEP Tomáš Zdechovský shared a map of Kaliningrad split down the middle into two zones, occupied by Poland and the Czech Republic, ironically celebrating the Czechs’ newfound Baltic port. If alien society is just an extension of our own boring bureaucracy, then perhaps they should stay on Mars - Elon Musk is sure to find commonality with such creatures, whenever he arrives there.Over the past few days, Twitter trolls have taken the meme war dealing with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to another level.Ĭzech social media users have been sharing tweets, tweaked maps, and mocking memes showing that the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad (Královec) is, in fact, historically Czech, and that a referendum should be held to decide the fate of the problematic stretch of land squeezed between Poland and Lithuania. Really, the most striking thing about these claims is the complete lack of imagination - imagine a universe teeming with omnipotent aliens, who take the time to have meetings with government representatives, produce carefully worded legal contracts, and name their organisation “the Galactic Federation.” that aliens not only understand contractual obligations, but seem to recognize the country as the most important place on Earth - it’s almost as if these stories reflect the bland beliefs of ex-government officials! ![]() Hellyer goes into great detail describing his extraterrestrial mythology, proving that even the most highly educated and well-respected among us are susceptible to delusion. ![]() Strangely enough, Eshed isn’t the only former government official to make such claims Canada’s former Defense Minister Paul Hellyer is famous for his bizarre insistence that multiple species of aliens have visited Earth, again, working with the American government. The existence of a Galactic Federation might seem a bit far-fetched, sure, but the idea of Trump keeping such an Earth-shattering secret, never blurting it out during a rally, is simply beyond the realm of possibility. I thought we were pretty familiar with those two concepts, judging from decades of science fiction stories and successful space travel, but the aliens don’t appear to agree. ![]()
