Ambify drug2/21/2023 ![]() ![]() He says he has discontinued the drug’s use in 15 to 20 percent of the autistic people he treats, one or two of whom have gained more than 100 pounds.Ī string of lawsuits over the past several years have charged that aripiprazole’s developers, the pharmaceutical companies Otsuka Pharmaceutical and Bristol-Myers Squibb, did not adequately warn users of the drug’s potential side effects - including compulsive behaviors such as gambling, sex addiction and excessive shopping. “The weight gain is not subtle,” says Eric London, director of autism treatment research at the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities. And perhaps most concerning, aripiprazole appears to cause just as much weight gain as risperidone, compounding a problem many children with autism already have. ![]() It might also be linked to heart problems in autistic children. As with many antipsychotic medications, long-term use of aripiprazole can lead to tardive dyskinesia, as it did for Jaymes. But a decade’s worth of data suggest that is untrue. The drug, marketed as Abilify, initially had a reputation of having fewer side effects than risperidone, its only competitor in this population. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved aripiprazole for children with autism. Of all the drugs Jaymes had been prescribed, aripiprazole was “one of the worst,” she says. He had fewer angry outbursts, but Lesovoy decided the side effects were not worth it. (Jaymes was later diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, which his doctors say explains the leg-kicking.) After a year on the drug, Jaymes had gained 50 pounds. When he started with aripiprazole, his mother says, he began to flail his arms, kick his legs and scrunch up his face without warning - severe involuntary muscle spasms called tardive dyskinesia. There were other, more disturbing changes. Any chance he got to get food, he would take it,” Lesovoy says. Jaymes was underweight when he started taking aripiprazole, but within a few weeks, he was always hungry: “He would sneak food he would eat huge amounts at mealtimes. “I didn’t have a lot of life experience, so all I knew to do was what the professionals told me.” She worried Jaymes might also experience side effects but felt she had few choices left. She had taken the medication herself a year earlier for her own autism and bipolar disorder, and she had experienced an unusual side effect: trouble urinating, which disappeared after she stopped taking the drug. Jaymes’ mother, Amber Lesovoy, was familiar with aripiprazole. That drug had been approved in 2009 to treat irritability in autistic children aged 6 and older. When he was 10, another doctor suggested Jaymes try a different antipsychotic: aripiprazole. Still, Jaymes acted out at home and at school, and continued to do so for years. A few years later, he added a second medication to the mix - the seizure drug valproic acid - although Jaymes does not have seizures. In 2006, when Jaymes was 2, the doctor prescribed risperidone - an antipsychotic medication that had been approved earlier that year to treat irritability in autistic children aged 5 and older. Jaymes’ pediatrician suggested behavioral and speech therapy, but neither approach reined in the boy’s aggression. At 18 months of age, he was diagnosed with autism. ![]() He hit and bit his parents, and he tore apart his and his sisters’ toys. Even as a toddler, Jaymes Lesovoy was violent. ![]()

Speed flex2/21/2023 ![]() (Huge thanks to Omar Jalife for laying the groundwork for this entry.) I even think the Steelers’ cut numbers look better than the Giants’ intact numbers, which I wouldn’t have guessed would be the case until I actually saw them side by side. Personally, I think the cut stripes look much better. That leaves us with two teams that let their helmet ornamentation extend across the gap without cutting it - the Cowboys and Rams: The Broncos did cut their striping, however, on their recent Thursday-night helmet design:Ħ. It looks like their equipment staff may actually have shortened the stripe just a bit on the SpeedFlex shells, to keep the stripe from reaching the gap (click to enlarge): ![]() Their center stripe doesn’t extend all the way down to the nose bumper - it stops a few inches short, right around the spot where the SpeedFlex gap would be. Both teams cut their stripes, but they take different approaches to their helmet numbers: The Steelers cut theirs, while the Giants leave theirs intact across the gap (click to enlarge).ĥ. There are two teams - the Giants and Steelers - that, in addition to center striping, have uniform numbers on the front of their helmets, and these numbers also extend into the SpeedFlex gap. Three additional teams - the Browns, Panthers, and Saints - have been inconsistent, sometimes cutting their striping tape and sometimes not (click to enlarge):Ĥ. Of those 21 teams, 13 of them cut their striping tape as it crosses the gap - the Bengals, Bills, Colts, Dolphins, 49ers, Jets, Lions, Packers, Raiders, Ravens, Seahawks, Titans, and Washington (if you can’t see the slideshow below, click here):ģ. (The 11 remaining teams with no helmet striping or other graphics extending into the SpeedFlex gap are the Bears, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Chargers, Chiefs, Eagles, Falcons, Jaguars, Patriots, Texans, and Vikings.)Ģ. So that gives us a total of 21 teams to assess. In addition, the Bengals’ tiger stripes and the Rams’ horns extend over the SpeedFlex gap. ![]() Of the 32 NFL teams, 19 of them have center striping on their helmets. Let’s see how the numbers stack up, shall we? One thing at a time:ġ. Reader Omar Jalife has done some heroic photo research to determine how each stripe-helmeted NFL team handles this (a trickier task than you might think, because some teams only have one or two SpeedFlex-clad players). Several readers have commented in recent weeks that the Cowboys run their striping tape across that cutout, while most other teams take the trouble to cut their stripes as they cross the gap (see examples of both styles at right). The Riddell SpeedFlex helmet presents a challenge for NFL equipment managers, because its shell includes a cutout on the crown, right where striping tape would normally be passing through. ![]() Copyright free fonts2/21/2023 ![]() ![]() If you were accustomed to the old site or if you’re new to Google Fonts, this tour will get you up to speed. Here we’re going to go into a bit more depth, comparing the old Google Fonts and the new one side by side. ![]() The Google design team released a nice explanation of their redesign, pointing out, for example, their introduction of new color options, a more versatile grid layout and select UI changes. Mockup of a component of the new Google Fonts website, via Google The new Google Fonts On the whole though, it is a very good option at an unbeatable price. On Google you may occasionally run into issues, like awkward kerning, bad rendering at very large or small typefaces, or just aesthetically questionable student work. Typekit has way more fonts, and all of them demonstrate the highest degree of craftsmanship. But because it is free and the type designers aren’t seeing any royalties, it is never going to be able to pull the kind of quantity and quality that Typekit does. Six years into its existence, Google Fonts is able to boast plenty of quality typefaces. So why would people opt for expensive Typekit over free Google Fonts at this point? In general, Google, being a web-based company, stands to benefit from a faster and more attractive Internet. Google uses Google Fonts for its own platform, so it is in their interest to have visitors’ computers primed to use their products at lightning speed. Another is that, once a user downloads a web font once, they have it forever-so every site they visit with that font from then on will load at optimum speed. One of them is that they want to discourage web designers from using image files instead of font files, because images cannot be indexed by Google’s search algorithms. ![]() Mockup of a component of the new Google Fonts site, via Google So what’s in it for Google? Obviously they aren’t doing this just from the good of their hearts. Yes, free free: all of the typefaces listed in the Google Fonts directory are open source, meaning that you can not only use them for any web page, commercial or non-commercial, but, unlike with Typekit, you can also download them onto your computer and even tweak them yourself! Best of all, Google’s massive server power means that download speeds are lightning fast, ensuring that your web visitors have a good experience. Not to be outdone, the Internet giant decided to create a comparable service for free. The biggest of these services is Adobe Typekit.Įnter Google. Are Google Fonts really free? What’s the catch?įollowing the revolution, a couple of services popped up offering a good selection of web fonts for a monthly fee, which they shared with the professional font foundries who supplied the typefaces. Fonts that are made to interact with this software are called web fonts. A CSS program called arrives, making it viable for the first time for website visitors to download font-files on the spot without too terrible of a download time. If you come across something more unique, it’s probably an image file.įast forward to 2009. ![]() The web starts looking nicer, but you’re still mostly see the same typefaces over and over. In ’96, Microsoft decided to do the Internet a solid by distributing a selection of fonts for free, including Arial, Times New Roman and Verdana, in order to increase the stock of viable typefaces for web designers to use. If a visitor does not have the typeface you have used on your website, they have to download it on the spot, which in the days of dial up, is a no go. At this point, if you’re a web designer, the only typefaces you can reasonably select are the ones that you can be sure every personal computer owner already has installed on his or her machine. Rewind to the dawn of the modern Internet: 1996. First we need to breeze through some basic questions. Here we’re going to take a quick tour that will tell you what you need to know to use this service intelligently, whether you are a newcomer or a Google Fonts veteran. In June they released a brand new version of the website, and it is glorious. Mockup of a component of the new Google Fonts website, via Google As an increasingly design-oriented company, Google evidently saw that a major UI/UX redesign was in order. It got the job done, but it wasn’t pretty, and it wasn’t especially easy to use. The original website was definitely what the startup world would call an MVP: minimal viable product. Over the next six years it grew considerably, becoming very popular with web designers-for the obvious reason of affordability. Google launched Google Fonts in 2010 to provide web fonts free of charge. ![]() Words to speech timer2/21/2023 ![]() In contrast, electrocorticography is a direct neural recording method that allows monitoring brain activity with high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution 14. Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have shown that imagined speech activates Wernicke’s area 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (superior temporal gyrus and superior temporal sulcus) and Broca’s area 9, 10 (inferior frontal gyrus) – two essential language areas involved in speech comprehension and production, respectively (see 11, 12 for reviews).Īlthough traditional brain imaging techniques have identified anatomical regions associated with imagined speech, these methods lack the temporal resolution to investigate the rapid temporal neural dynamics during imagined speech 13. Despite intense investigation, the neural mechanisms underlying imagined speech remain poorly defined in part due to the lack of clear timing of inner speech, and the subjective nature of speech imagery. Imagined speech (i.e., inner speech, silent speech, speech imagery, covert speech or verbal thoughts) is defined as the ability to generate internal auditory representations of speech sounds, in the absence of any external speech stimulation or self-generated overt speech. One approach to decoding intended speech is to model the neural representation of speech imagery. Here, we used direct cortical recording (electrocorticography ECoG) to examine if individual words could be selected during imagined speech within a binary classification framework. People with speech production impairments would benefit from a system that can infer intended speech directly from brain signals. These disorders include brainstem infarcts, traumatic brain injury, stroke and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 1. Several neurological disorders limit verbal communication despite the patient being fully aware of what they want to say. These data represent a proof of concept study for basic decoding of speech imagery, and delineate a number of key challenges to usage of speech imagery neural representations for clinical applications. The results provide evidence for a neural representation for imagined words in the temporal lobe, frontal lobe and sensorimotor cortex, consistent with previous findings in speech perception and production. As predicted, higher classification accuracy was obtained in the listening and overt speech conditions (mean = 89% and 86%, respectively p < 0.0001), where speech stimuli were directly presented. We also compared classification accuracy between imagined speech, overt speech and listening. Classification accuracy reached 88% in a two-class classification framework (50% chance level), and average classification accuracy across fifteen word-pairs was significant across five subjects (mean = 58% p < 0.05). To account for temporal irregularities during speech production, we introduced a non-linear time alignment into the SVM kernel. In a word imagery task, we used high gamma (70–150 Hz) time features with a support vector machine model to classify individual words from a pair of words. Here, we showed the ability to classify individual words during imagined speech from electrocorticographic signals. Also, bear in mind the fact that you will have to speed up and slow down in some cases depending on the crowd’s reaction.People that cannot communicate due to neurological disorders would benefit from an internal speech decoder. With this tool, you can determine the number of words to write in your speech depending on the time you will have to make your speech. Perhaps, an ideal way to determine the time your speech will take is using our words to minutes speech calculator. What’s more, whether the speaker emphasizes some points or not can influence the speed with which they make a speech. However, this depends on whether the speaker encounters cheering, applause, and other crowd reactions. On average, a person speaks around 90 to 150 words per minute. Luckily, our speech writing service words to minutes’ converter can help you determine how fast your speech should be. For instance, if your audience is familiar with your topic, you can speak a little faster than when addressing people that are not familiar with the topic. Additionally, your audience should influence how fast you speak when making a speech. One of the factors that determine the number of words you can speak per minute is whether the speech will be recorded or live. Well, these are common questions that most speakers ask when preparing their speech. But, how do you determine the number of words to speak per minute to ensure that your audience follows your speech? What’s more, how do you ensure that your speech is not too short or too long? When making a speech, your audience expects you to be interesting, charming, and articulate. One of the essential considerations is the time you will have to make your speech. ![]() ![]() Writing a great speech requires careful considering of several factors. ![]() Hunting simulator 2 trophy animals2/21/2023 ![]() ![]() There’s a lot of slow walking in the forest and carefully tracking footprints and droppings, or sitting in a stand and just… waiting. This is why a sleep tracker is a great tool to keep track of your sleep because that information is so important. The key is to try to understand when you are having restful quality sleep and when you are not. If you wake up multiple times at night, you can write these down, but again don’t become obsessed if you are waking to use the bathroom every so often. You will start to notice patterns within a few weeks and be able to dig deeper into what these are. Just write down your behaviors and habits. This will help keep your sleeping habit from affecting other areas of your life. Obsessing over one specific thing goes back to the importance of focusing on big picture factors rather than minor details. Noting Your HabitsĪlso, if you do happen to discover a correlation between a factor and a change in your sleep habits it’s important not to become obsessed with that factor. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by over analyzing what might affect your ability to sleep well, which will likely lead to more stress and anxiety around trying to get a good night’s sleep. The reason for this is that sleeping well and waking up feeling refreshed is the result of a long term process and not based on one or two factors. It’s not necessary to concern yourself with the details of every little thing that might be slightly off, but instead focus on what factors affect your sleep the most and if any changes need to be made. Sleeping patterns are important because they are indicators of what is affecting your ability to sleep well. ![]() Sleepless nights are absolutely terrible and I am so grateful to understand how some of my behaviors have affected my sleep health. For me, I realized having a glass of wine or an argument of sorts before bed led to the worst sleep nights. I use a date, time asleep, and then notes for what I did before. As long as you are making sure you are capturing the time and the factors which led you to the quality or lack of quality sleep, you can design any type of entry. You can draw one in or print one out and paste in on for the month. You can create any number of types of sleep trackers for you to capture your sleep. The purpose of the sleep tracker here is to keep track of your sleeping habits and see if there are any patterns with how you are sleeping. You can also add notes to each day about what you dreamt about or how well rested you feel, etc. It’s ok to estimate so it’s important not to over analyze these numbers. Put in the date, the time you feel asleep and about how long you slept for. This is a nice easy design to start your tracking. There are countless ways to format the sleep tracker in your bullet journal.
